Fake Paint
Soon after the Palm Zire 72 came out in the market, early adopters, especially the guys, found the paint peeling off rather too quickly for their liking. In fact, it was not supposed to come out at all! Which was probably why they treated their Z72s the usual way – no TLC.
By the time I decided to get a Zire 72 of my own, I’d heard enough stories to know that it will need a case to protect the paint from peeling off. Fortunately, the day I went to get it, I was told the shop had just received a case made just for the Zire 72. So I bought the case along with the gadget. Which meant my Z72 has been protected from day 1 of my ownership.
It was two months before the blue paint on the Z72 showed any signs of peeling. Where? On the lower left corner, one of the few areas not protected by the case.
Yesterday, I found the stylus pen was leaking ink. When trying to clean off the ink, quite a bit of the blue paint just behind the stylus slot peeled off. That’s right, peeled off. Not chipped off in bits and pieces, but peeled off in a clean strip clear away from that part of the Zire 72.
Paint?
More like plastic film.
I can’t remember the details, but the blue “paint” used on the Zire 72 is apparently some new technology. Yeah, right. It never bonded with the metal surface.
Whatever.
I’m not upset that my Zire 72 is now peeling. In fact, I wanted to peel it all off cuz the little bit of metal that’s now exposed looks quite neat and cool. I rubbed the surface a bit but no more blue film came off, so I left it for another time.
Meanwhile, I’ve ordered the Slipper Zire 72 by EBCases. I’ve used an EB Slipper case before (it was for my HandEra 330) so I know what exactly I’ll be getting – excellent quality.
Look forward to getting it soon. Have already received an email from them the same day I ordered, that the case has been shipped out.
Here are some pictures from the EBCases site:
