Skype me
I was on the line with Richard in Warren, CN CT (note – it’s CT, not CN. Thanks, Richard, for correcting me) and David in Boston, MA yesterday evening. My evening, their morning.
Richard had written about Skype on his weblog, Richard’s Notes. I’ve had Skype on my home PC for a while now. I left my Skype ID for him at his site. Yesterday evening, he messaged me on AIM to say we can try it if I wanted to. I did.
The first couple of attempts didn’t go through. That was him calling me. Then I called him, and it went through. Clear connection. We’d known each other since 2000 thereabouts through the AlphaSmart Community Centre and yesterday was the first time we spoke.
Talking one-to-one on Skype is fun. What’s more fun is participating in a conference call. I suggested it. He didn’t know there was such a feature, as he’s using Skype for Mac beta which doesn’t have it. To try it, we needed at least one more person to be on Skype. That would be David. Except he wasn’t online. One of the rare mornings I didn’t see him online as soon as I logged on. Richard called him and left a message on his answering machine. After waiting a while, there was still no sign of David. We both agreed the conference call would have to wait another day.
A while later, I saw David online, messaged Richard who replied he was already on Skype with him. But neither of them could initiate a conference call as they didn’t have the feature (yet) on their Skype for Mac beta. So it was up to me.
What was a clear connection less than half an hour ago had turned quite static. It took a few tries but eventually all three of us were chatting together.
Let me tell you – it was a thrill to be chatting with Richard and David at the same time.
