Not a crazy thing to do
The evening I brought Phoebe home, I joined the Malaysian MacUsers Group. I posted a hello on the online forum, and told the other members that I’d named my PB Phoebe. Someone’s reply included various icons that indicated that the person seemed surprised or amused about such a “practice”. At the time, I found myself thinking this person must be a guy (online nicks can be so gender-less), and that naming is a girl’s thing.
Later, when I was reading the Mac Users Unite! discussion thread over at NaNoWriMo 2004, I found that quite a few Mac users also name their Macs. List of names at the discussion thread as of 17:04, 09/10/04:
Celeste – 12-inch iBook G4
MacTheKnife – spiffy flat-panel iMac
Bessie – 14″ white iBook
Helga – e-mac
Beluga – flatscreen iMac
Nukua – 12″ iBook G3 900
Marshmallow – eMac
Alice – iBook
Virginia Dare – 12″ PowerBook
Artemisia – 14″ G3 iBook
Ice Tiger – 15 inch G4 Powerbook
Brain – G4 ibook
Serenity – 12″ G3 ibook
Seraph – 15.2″ PowerBook G4 DVI (Titanium)
Shadowfax – iBook
Benten – 14″ iBook
Trinity – 12″ Powerbook G4
A$$hole – 15″ PowerBook G4
Tasha – iMac
eastrockpark, Tasha’s owner, also made the following observation – “It’s a funny thing. I have always named my cars and my Macs. I have never named my PCs. Definitely. Name your ibook.”
My favourite from the list above? I have quite a few – Beluga, Nukua, Marshmallow, and Virginia Dare. Compared to them, my Phoebe is tame.

I just learned I’m not crazy. Val just told me other Malaysian Mac users, including herself, have also named their Macs. Hers is CHiQ.
