New link added

I’ve never written about any of the links on my weblog, but I think this one, added this afternoon, deserves a special mention, and in fact a category all its own:

yasmin the storyteller

I only just discovered this blog today. When I found it, I found myself asking could it be? is this her? where does she find the time to keep a blog?

Well, it is, and the answer to the last question seems to be she doesn’t, cuz the most recent entry is dated 16 September 2004.*

Anyway, yasmin the storyteller is Yasmin Ahmad, the lady behind all those nostalgic festive tv commercials (for big big Malaysian corporations that I won’t mention by name here) that have given a glimpse of Malaysian life as it was in the good old days. I’ve never said this anywhere before, but I enjoyed those tv commercials (dare I admit they brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat?) cuz I grew up during the good old days featured in those commercials.

yasmin the storyteller is a very appropriate name for her weblog because she is a very good storeyteller. The tv commercials that she has written and produced to date bear testimony to this. More than just tv commercials selling a company, product or service, they are stories – in particular, stories about Malaysia and her heritage. Kudos to her clients for taking the bold step of letting Yasmin tell stories instead of sell products.

From writing and producing tv commercials, Yasmin has gone on to directing. Two of her works are Rabun and Sepet.

Personally, I’m very excited about yasmin the storyteller because of the offer held out by Yasmin in her first blog entry:

“… if what little i’ve said so far piques your interest even a little, i’d like to chat about film with you. and if you’re malaysian, i’d like to hear how you think we can make better films, because we’re presently making some pretty dire ones, and it gets embarrassing for me sometimes to talk about films with my friends from japan, india, china, indonesia, france, and thailand.

welcome to the storyteller.”

the story begins on the 3rd of august 2004

*With the year-end festive season just a few weeks away, she’s probably mega busy overseeing post-production work on new tv commercials that she wrote, directed and shot.
