Visiting with Pandas

There was a documentary on giant pandas on Astro 51 (Animal Planet) at 8:00 p.m. yesterday evening and midnight this morning. Since I was not home to watch at the earlier hour, I made sure to watch the midnight screening. VaLz was watching at home, too, as she had prayer meeting earlier. So, we were watching it “together” .

The documentary highlighted progress made at the Wolong Panda Conservation Centre, particularly on renewed efforts to release captive pandas back to the wild.

Some of the footages were taken from an earlier documentary I saw four years ago. Saw some familiar faces in those earlier footages. Saw the same familiar faces now. Where before they were mere cubs, they are all grown now, some of them mothers with their own offsprings!

Two of the familiar ones were Fei Fei, who had been abandoned by her mother at birth (her birth was shown in the earlier documentary from four years ago), and Lei Lei, a wild giant panda found with her left fore paw caught in a trap. The paw was later amputated, and there was concern that she would never be able to nurse any cubs she might later have as giant pandas need both fore paws to care for their babies. Well, good news – the new documentary showed her successfully caring for her newborn cub, which was not her first, but her third!

I enjoyed the documentary, not just for the clips of the cute and clumsy (VaLz’s words) pandas, but for the updates of some old friends from the earlier documentary.

Yeah, I visited with my favourite stress busters this morning. Great way to start a new day.
