Respect where respect’s due

On Sunday evening, I had plugged my ZenX into my home PC to upload some new songs. There was a crackling noise, and after a while, the home PC displayed a “Device Not Recognised” message.

Wot?

I tested the ZenX on another USB port. Same message.

I plugged in my USB thumbdrive – it worked.

I agonised about it. I sms’d the guy who sold the ZenX to me. He was busy.

I searched the Creative site, went through the Knowledge Base, signed up for the Discussion Forums, posted a query, and sent an email to Customer Care Support.

The next morning, I received a reply from Customer Care Support with suggestions that I’d already figured out to try but they didn’t work. I replied, and within the course of the day, I heard back from the same Customer Care Support person a couple of times. That’s pretty good support – kudos to Creative.

I plugged the ZenX into the work PC, and it worked. So it’s not my ZenX that’s faulty. *phew* It works in standalone mode, it connects to my work PC, I just can’t upload new songs to it from the home PC.

Something wrong with the home PC?

Yesterday evening, the friend who built my home PC was online so I pestered him to help figure out what’s wrong. I thought I might need him to come over and check the USB ports. He offered a couple of suggestions, to which I said no, cuz they were too complicated for me to handle.

While talking to him, I decided to try plugging the ZenX into the PC and see what happens.

It worked.

Wot?

The home PC recognised the ZenX again!

Here’s what I think happened:

Sunday night, I’d plugged the USB cable into the ZenX before the home PC.

Yesterday evening, I’d plugged the cable into the home PC before the ZenX.

See the difference?

Connect to the bigger machine first. Especially if it’s the one “hosting” the little guy.

I could be wrong. But my ZenX is working with my home PC again. That’s all that matters.

From now on, respect where respect’s due – the bigger machine before the little one.
