A much loved, much treasured book
My 24-year-old copy of Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior:

Bought it for M$6.35 back in 1980. Yes, back when the Malaysian unit of currency was still the dollar. It’s been to England and back with me.
And the 24-year-old picture of its author on the back cover:

Asked Marita to read the first paragraph over dinner this evening, and I think she’s hooked. At least, she jotted down the name of book and author.
I think I’m allowed to quote the first paragraph here, too:
| “You must not tell anyone,” my mother said, “what I am about to tell you. In China your father had a sister who killed herself. She jumped into the family well. We say that your father has all brothers because it is as if she had never been born.” |
