Dated Song
On the original (i.e., vinyl) version of the Carpenters’ A Song for You album, there’s a song called “Intermission” that’s the last song on Side 1 of the same album.
For those of you old enough to remember, a vinyl record comprises two sides – Side 1 and Side 2 – and when Side 1 finishes, you have to take the album off the turntable, flip it over, put it back on the turntable and start playing Side 2. Of course, you also have to lift the stylus off the turntable, altho usually, it automatically does that by itself.
So, on this Carpenters album is this song called “Intermission”, less than a minute, and featuring these lyrics:
“We’ll be right
We’ll be right
We’ll be right
We’ll be right back
After we go to the bathroom”
When we first heard it, we thought it was so cute. It gave an idea of what artistes do while we, the listeners, are flipping their albums over – take a bathroom break before coming back to entertain us with the rest of the songs.
Cute? On the CD, it’s out of place and dated.
Why?
Cuz on a CD, there is no Side 1 or Side 2 and you don’t have to flip it over to continue playing, it just plays straight through. So there’s no chance for the artistes to go for a bathroom break.
Yup, “Intermission” is included on the CD version, altho, as I was listening to it this morning, I thought it should have been excluded. Of course, now that I have a copy on my ZenX, I can exclude it from the playlist myself. But I won’t.
When I listen to ZenX versions of my CD collection, I like to listen to them in the order of the original song listing. This is especially important for “live” albums.
I think it’s called nostalgia.
But that’s just me.
