Day off
It’s a holiday here tomorrow.
My brother sent me a text message to remind him to call father on Friday morning. I replied, asking if it was a holiday for them, too. He replied it was one of 10 designated public holidays for Singapore.
I just had a look at the little calendar pasted on the wall next to my work computer and counted the number of yellow highlighted dates on it (yellow for public holidays). Guess how many?
15.
We have 15 designated public holidays here in Malaysia.
Oh wait … do double holidays count? No? Okay, then it’s 13 designated public holidays here in Malaysia. With two days each for Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Puasa, that’s a total of 15 official days off on top of the annual leave given by our employers (which varies according to who you work for and how many years you’ve worked).
What’s tomorrow’s day off for? To commemorate Muslims going on the pilgrimage to their Holy Land, the day is called Hari Raya Haji.
How am I going to spend it? A bit of sleeping in, then probably breakfast with dad, then go spend some time with mum, hopefully some reading and writing, too.
And since tomorrow’s Friday, it’s a long weekend this weekend.
How am I going to spend the two days after tomorrow? Oh … I have things to do. You don’t have to worry about me.
