Incompatible

I upgraded my handphone’s SIM card yesterday to 128k. The original one could only carry a maximum of 10 text messages. Altho that is no longer a problem as I am now using a Sony Ericcson handphone which stores data in the phone and does not only rely on the SIM card, since the upgrade is available (especially for prepaid), I thought why not.

After the upgrade, I checked the address book and found that it was still the same, i.e., no additional ability to save numbers to either phone or card. A while later, I realised that since the SIM card is separate from the phone, then maybe its new features are located elsewhere in the phone. I was right.

The new SIM card’s features are accessible from the “Connect” section, in a folder called “smart SIM”. Its menu features 10 items, including My Phonebook and My Organiser. These two items are similar to the phone’s own Phonebook and Organiser, but because the phone maker and phone service provider are separate companies, these two features, altho identical, cannot be merged and used together.

So when I add a new contact to the phonebook in the phone, I cannot choose to save it in either the phone or SIM card in the same phonebook. And when I check the phonebook for a number, I better remember where I saved it, too, else I will be checking two phone books instead of going straight to the one it’s in.

Just about the only thing “compatible” beween my handphone and the SIM card is this – the phone allows all numbers to be copied to the SIM card.

Oh, and when I send a text message, I can select the number from phone book or SIM entries.

It’s quite troublesome, but I suppose I’ll get used to it.
