Lyrics: “Two Little Boys” by Rolf Harris
My friend, deesee, has a “Song of the Day” feature at his weblog, an entry about a particular song, mostly from the 70s, accompanied by streaming audio of the song (is that what it’s called, dee?).
Now deesee’s my contemporary (altho a few years younger) and his musical likes are very similar to mine, so I’ve been enjoying his SOTD offerings, and the memories that came with them, too.
A recent SOTD offering was “Nobody’s Child” by Karen Young. I’d completely forgotten about this song until I saw it at his weblog. It was a real tearjerker, and very quickly brought to mind another tearjerker, “Two Little Boys”, by Rolf Harris. In my comment to the Karen Young song, I mentioned “Two Little Boys”, and now deesee has uploaded it to his weblog.
Both “Nobody’s Child” and “Two Little Boys” are real tearjerkers. But that’s the only thing they have in common. “Nobody’s Child” is a loner’s song, talking about the self, especially one that feels unwanted because of a deformity (which, if I remember the lyrics, is blindness). “Two Little Boys”, on the other hand, is about friendship.
Since deesee only focuses on the audio of the SOTD, I thought I’d complement his “Two Little Boys” entry with the lyrics to the song.
| Two little boys had two little toys Each had a wooden horse Gaily they played each summer’s day Warriors both of course One little chap then had a mishap Broke off his horse’s head Wept for his toy then cried with joy As his young playmate said “Did you think I would leave you crying Long years had passed, war came so fast “Did you think I would leave you dying “Do you think I would leave you dying |
Hmm … did that bring a tear to your eyes? Why not listen to it along with the lyrics?
