Women Selection on Radio ZenX
This morning, in honour of International Women’s Day today, I put on my “Women” playlist for my drive to work. I even put ZenX in “shuffle” mode so I didn’t always know what was coming on next.
It was quite a good selection that got played – a couple of Joan Armatrading’s songs, including “The Shouting Stage”, Alison Moyet’s “All Cried Out”, Dionne Warwicke’s “That’s What Friends Are For”, Bette Midler’s “In My Life”, Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walking”, Tracy Chapman’s “Less than Strangers” and “Telling Stories”, and Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park”.
The biggest surprise was kdlang’s “Johnny Get Angry”. A “live” version, but probably not the one I saw on Saturday Night Live. But having seen her perform this song before, I knew what was going on as she sang it, and why there was a longish silence towards the end of the song, accompanied by laughter from the audience. That’s where she took an imaginary punch from Johnny and fell to the floor. That’s the part of kd’s career before “Constant Craving”, the performance artiste part of her career.
