Unicorns do exist

Well, at least on the Janis Ian Message Board.

A Folk Music Fan had started a discussion thread about a quiz called “What Animal are You?” Turned out she’s a unicorn. As are quite a few other Rudies. A total of four unicorn Rudies.

Unicorns.

It got me thinking of a song from my younger days.

“The Unicorn” by The Irish Rovers.

I posted a new thread to ask if anyone knew the song. A few said yes. Including KiwiSoupGirl in NZ who said the song was a huge hit in NZ when she was around 10 yrs old, and she loves it still, and used to sing it to her kids when they were small.

One thing led to another, and a few emails later, a copy was on its way to NZ. I think I made one NZ family very happy this weekend.

It’s a real nice singalong song, so I thought I would share the song, as well as the lyrics (so you can sing along to it, too).

“The Unicorn”
(The Irish Rovers)

A long time ago when the earth was green
There were more kinds of animals than you’ve ever seen
They’d run around free while the earth was being born
But the loveliest of all was the Unicorn

There were green alligators and long necked geese
Some humpty-back camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
The loveliest of all was the Unicorn

Now God seen some sinning and it gave Him pain
And He said “Stand back, I’m going to make it rain.”
He said “Hey brother Noah, I’ll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo. And take some of them …

Green alligators and long necked geese
Some humpty-back camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
Don’t you forget My Unicorn.”

Well Noah was there to answer the call
And he finished making the ark just as the rain started to fall
He marched in the animals two by two
And he called out as they went through

“Hey Lord, I got Your …
Green alligators and long necked geese
Some humpty-back camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants
but sure as you’re born
I just don’t see no Unicorn.”

Well Noah looked out through the driving rain
Those Unicorns were hiding, and playing silly games
They were kicking and a-splashing while the rain was pouring down
Oh them silly Unicorns

There were green alligators and long necked geese
Some humpty-back camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried “Close the door, for the rain is pouring
And we just can’t wait for no Unicorn.”

Well the ark started moving, it drifted with the tide
Those Unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
And that’s why you’ll never see a Unicorn …
to this very day

You’ll see green alligators and long necked geese
Some humpty-back camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
You’re never gonna see no Unicorn

Listen and sing along to the song here.

And what animal am I?

A butterfly.

I tested again (there were some questions different from the first time I tested), and the result the second time round?

A caterpillar.
