The green and the purple of NaNoWriMo

The green bar appears when a participant passes the 50,000-word count and updates it on their profile at the NaNoWriMo site.

The purple bar appears after the word count is validated by the NaNoWriMo site’s word count validator.

I’d written all my 2005 NaNovel on my AlphaSmart Dana, saving each day’s writing as an individual file. I’d then uploaded and combined all the individual files in RoughDraft on my desktop computer. Both my Dana and RoughDraft counted the same number of words in my 2005 NaNovel – 50,337. NaNoWriMo’s word count validator counted it at 50,625, which is 288 words more than what my Dana and RoughDraft counted.
