White Hair (or Coming of Age)

Posted on 10 January 2006 @ 01:00 in Personal

For years, I’ve waited for my first strand of white hair. I found it yesterday evening (how appropriate, as I approach my 48th year). How did I feel? For one thing, it looked out of place on my head – not just because it’s white, but because, for some reason, it’s wavy against my straight dark hair.

Was it cause for celebration? More like cause for reflection. I found myself asking what do I have to show for all my years. Not much, sad to say.

And what did I do with that single strand of wavy white hair? I plucked it out and threw it away.

If there’s any truth in that Chinese old grandmother’s tale ( “Don’t pluck out that white hair, many more will grow in its place!” ), that one strand will soon be replaced by many more.

What the … ?

An email message I forwarded from my home email account to my Yahoo! account was delivered into the Bulk folder. Does that make me a spammer to myself? :???:

Here’s looking at you, kid

You can’t tell from the picture, but this little fellow was barking, barking, barking at me, too. Yes, at me!

Getting to know you: Malaysia K9 Day 2006

Posted on 8 January 2006 @ 22:42 in Fun Stuff

I went along to the Malaysia K9 Day 2006 this morning even tho I don’t own a dog. I wish I did, but it’s even more difficult now that I’m about to move to an apartment where pets are not allowed. But I do love dogs, and not only because I’m born in the year of the dog.

This is either the third or fourth year the event has been held, and the organisation just gets better each year. Kudos to the organisers, www.puppy.com.my, and sponsors.

The event was publicised as for dog lovers, and as far as I could see, there were three types of dog lovers present today – participating dog owners of the various competitions, non-participating dog owners, and non-dog owners (maybe they were looking for a good breed to buy or just curious).

It was trully a gathering of a wide cross-section of dog breeds both common and rare. The common ones included alsatians, golden retrievers, pugs and shih tzus, while the rare ones hardly seen in this country included chow-chows (there were at least three today), bassett hounds and even a shar-pei.

The bigger dogs were the well-behaved ones while their little “brothers” were barking away like they were the big fellows there today. There were some shy looking ones (probably not allowed out of the house much) and others that got excited seeing other types of dogs. There was even a beagle checking out a pug and getting into “position”; good thing the pug’s owners saw and pulled them apart in time.

My Nikon 5900 was put to good use today; my favourite shots are the ones of different breeds checking each other out. Check them out below.

Grandpa Chin

For some reason, I’ve been thinking of my grandfather today. I didn’t know him very well, if at all; I was only learning to walk when he passed away.

But he was a big part of the shop that was a big part of my life, so I guess he has had some influence on my life.

Something came up recently that brought the shop to mind. I’m thinking whether to post about it. If I do, someone will get hurt (well, only if they know about this site and come to read it). But if I don’t, my parents’ side of the story won’t get told. I’ll think about this further.

Back to Grandpa Chin. He was quite a well-known figure around Kuala Lumpur in those days. Just how well-known? When he passed away, he had a grand send-off which included a parade through the streets. The entire family also gathered in front of the hearse for one last photo with him:

I’m in there, a little round-headed kid in my nanny’s arms.

For Rolly – I’ve added a link to a bigger picture, just hold the mouse over the picture above and click to view it. My family is identified in circles, and I’m the one in my nanny’s arms (she’s family, too).
