Janis Ian “live” online chat, 3:00 p.m. CENTRAL, 25 February 2006

My job was to give “voice” to each person when it was their turn to ask Janis a question. This was to avoid cross chatting and to allow everyone a chance to chat with her. When it was someone’s turn, a message “username has been given voice” would appear on the screen that everyone could see. And when the person’s turn was over, another message “username’s voice taken away” would appear.

Pat, Janis’s partner, joined the chat just as Janis finished answering rickster’s question, so she saw the message “rickster’s voice taken away” . She immediately commented “give that boy his voice back.” After Janis explained what was going on, Pat said “ok. i’m just listening.”

That to me was the funniest part of the chat.

The scariest part? We got slashdotted.

I’d tried to enter the chat room about half an hour before the chat was due to begin, and found that I couldn’t. Emails from Janis and Redjack showed that neither could they. Posts on the forum showed that a lot of the others couldn’t either, while those who were already in found their computers freezing on them.

Between Redjack and John L, webmaster of Janis’s web site, the Kyalla site was soon back online and the chat got underway, just a few minutes after the scheduled start time.

After a shaky start, I settled into my job as voice giver. There were times when the “given voice” and “voice taken” messages were slow to show on the screen. And then I found a notice on my screen that someone had sent me a private message. Who? I clicked on the link to find it.

It was Janis. In the midst of answering questions, she found time to check on me. I was so chuffed I saved a graphic of our little “chat” .

What a great anniversary present. *big grin*

Thanks, Janis, for taking the time to do the chat.

A Private Moment

Looks like Mama checking on Tai to see if he needs a diaper change.

A very private moment, indeed. Haha …

A Janis Ian anniversary

Posted on 25 February 2006 @ 22:19 in Janis Ian

Tomorrow marks my first year anniversary of seeing Janis Ian “live” in concert. Yes, it was a year ago on 26 February 2005 that I saw her “live” and “in the flesh” .

So many things have happened since then. And at least two things to look forward to.

Janis Ian “live” online chat

Held in conjunction with the release of her 24th album, Folk is the New Black, the “live” online chat will take place at 3:00 p.m. Central on Saturday, 25 February 2006. Translated to local time, it’s at 5:00 a.m., Sunday, 26 February 2006. Not only will I be there for the chat, I’m actually one of the moderators.

The chat will be held here:

UK Living Room Concert

Back in December 2004, I’d written about my wish list. On it was the wish to be able to afford a Living Room Concert. One reason was to be able to see her singing in person, while the other reason was to be able to contribute to what I think is a really worthy cause.

Well, part of that wish came true when she came to Singapore for that concert on 26 February 2005 and, Singapore being only a 30-minute flight away, of course I made sure to be in the audience that evening.

Now, the rest of that wish is coming true.

I’ll be flying to England to attend a Living Room Concert on Easter Sunday which is being held to celebrate fellow Rudie Rowy’s 60th birthday. She has 20 tickets for her guests and the remainder will be taken by UK Rudies, as well as three honorary UK Rudies - Anna (Dublin), Marjan (Netherlands) and me (Malaysia).

I confirmed my attendance when I bought a ticket at the recent MAS Travel Fair.

Anna from Dublin had her own Living Room Concert back in January 2000 and wrote about it here.

Tai’s “Hangover”

This one’s by autumncat. Doesn’t Tai look like he has a hangover?

I posted a comment to the picture at Flickr. It was a caption which read “Oh, my head … Mama was right, I should’ve gone to bed early last night.”

Pandas, pandas everywhere

Well, not real life pandas, but pictures of them. Thanks to Flickr, there are now so many panda pictures on the Net. And so many Flickr groups about pandas, too!

I’m a member of two - PandasUnlimited and Giant Panda Zoo. While I don’t have that many pictures to share (except old ones, mostly captured from both the National Zoo and San Diego Zoos’ webcams from a few years ago), I have made some new panda friends, including somesai who has given permission to post her pictures here. I’ll be asking the others later for the same permission. *grin*

Here’s a recent one she took of Tai:

Cute, hor?
