Malaysian Writers in Singapore

Posted on 29 June 2007 @ 18:22 in Books

I wish I could say they – or rather their books – are everywhere in Singapore. But the truth is, they (the books, specifically Kam Raslan’s Confessions of an Old Boy) were hard to find even in the bookshops. I had to go to the information counter to ask if the book was available in the shop.

Well, yes, Dato’ Hamid is available in both Borders and Kinokuniya in Singapore, but not where it should be. In Borders Singapore, Dato’ Hamid is shelved in the “Southeast Asian History” section, right next to his brother Karim’s Ceritalah. When I told the customer service person who took me to that section that the book is actually fiction, she said well, maybe it’s based on history. Which would make it historical fiction, and not … oh, never mind.

Can you see Dato’ Hamid in the picture below? (Clue – purple)

In Kinokuniya (Ngee Ann City outlet), Dato’ Hamid can be found in the “Culture & Tradition” section, along with Lee Su Kim’s A Nyonya in Texas, Lydia Teh’s Honk! If You’re Malaysian, and Adibah Amin’s two-volume As I was Passing.

If you’re looking for Antares’ Tanah Tujuh and Zhang Su Li’s A Backpack and A Bit of Luck, you’ll find them correctly shelved in the “Anthropology” section and the “Travel” section in Borders Singapore.

Dina Zaman’s I Am Muslim is also correctly shelved in the “Religion” section in both Borders Singapore and Kinokuniya (Ngee Ann City). There’s also a bonus – at Borders Singapore, I Am Muslim is featured in a display, “Insights to Islam” , and in good company, too, with Karen Armstrong’s Muhammad, as well as Irshad Manji’s The Trouble with Islam Today, Ed Husain’s The Islamist, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Infidel.

However, both Borders Singapore and Kinokuniya (Ngee Ann City) are still carrying the “First Printing” edition of I Am Muslim.

My Ladies in Red

Posted on 25 June 2007 @ 17:14 in Gadgets

A friend once told me she always pictures me with something red on me. And she was right. For a long time, I would wear a red belt with my pants, but that was only on weekends. I can’t remember what red thing I used to wear on weekdays.

These days, it’s not so much what I wear that’s red but what I carry. And what I always carry with me is my SonyEricsson k750i encased in a custom-made red leather Vajacase that I’d treated myself to shortly after I bought the phone. I first learned about Vajacases when I was looking around for a good case for my PDA. Vajacases are all hand-made, but very expensive. But since I’d bought the k750i at less than RM1k, and knowing I would be using it for a very long time (yup, no “upgrading” to fancier handphones for me), I decided to treat myself to a Vajacase custom-made for this particular model. It’s made in Argentina and came on FedEx via Tennessee. The cost? You really want to know? Inclusive of FedEx shipping and name personalisation, US$81. Not bad, right?

There’s a second red item I carry with me a lot these days, but it’s less visible than the k750i because it’s bigger and not so comfortably carried on my hand for too long. It’s my Levenger Circa junior sized red leather foldover notebook. Price? Without shipping, it cost US$68/-, less 20% during the 2006 Levenger Christmas sale.

Here are my two ladies in red:

Oh wait, I do wear something red on me – my red Crocs (seen here with Sharon’s red sandals).

Why red? It’s the only spot of colour on an otherwise drab me.

Today’s Events

I was at the MPH LitBloggers’ Breakfast Club this morning, but not the MyMUG MacFest in the evening (due to dinner and shopping with sister, which takes precedence over everything else).

In fact, I was the only regular at the MPH event this morning. (Even the regular rabble-rouser was not in sight!) Eric and Janet don’t count as regulars cuz they’re the organisers. We also had two surprise visitors, and pleasant surprises they were, too.

Anyways, since there were reports of previous BCs, I feel there should also be one this time. But later. For now, I will say I enjoyed myself very much, and also that we were treated to more than a reading. And then there were the two surprise visitors. But later, yah?

Another senior moment

On google chat with BD, fellow gadget-olic:

BD: Hey, how’s your Zen keeping?
C: My Zen is still going strong. Impressed a friend with it recently when I logged in and showed her her blog on it!
BD: Don’t understand the showing your friend’s blog bit..
C (after re-reading earlier part of chat): Sorry, I got my Zen and my TX mixed up. LOL!
BD: Grrr…!
C: It was the TX I was showing my friend’s blog on. I haven’t used my Zen for a while, but recently took it out to use again.
BD: I can’t live without my iPod

The Zen is an MP3 player (full name: Creative Zen Xtra), while the TX is a Palm PDA with built-in wi-fi

How can I forget this?
