What are you doing this weekend?

It’s a long weekend here in Malaysia. Deepavali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, is tomorrow, while Hari Raya Puasa, which commemorates the end of the Muslim fasting month, is next Tuesday and Wednesday (a two-day holiday here). Sandwiched between the two festive holidays is lone Monday, which a lot of companies, including mine, have “declared” a holiday. For sure the Malaysian Government has declared it a public holiday for its employees (aka Government or civil servants), and many companies in the private sector are following, altho not completely, e.g., where I work, we have to take compulsory leave next Monday, meaning one day gets deducted from our annual leave. But I digress …

I don’t go back to work till next Thursday. What will I be doing all those days? I’ll be house-sitting … no, wait, actually I’ll be maid watching.

My sister and family will be away, leaving her new maid alone in the house. This new maid has said she’s not afraid of being on her own, but this new maid has also been known to spend her days watching TV and generally not doing what she’s employed to do. Imagine what she’ll be up to 24 hours a day unsupervised. So just to let her know she can’t get away with not working, there’ll be someone to keep her company during the day, and me to sleep over at night.

Should be interesting. Net access is limited at my sister’s house (no wireless router), and I can only read, or watch so much tv, at a stretch. Well, with NNWM 2006 just 12 days or so away, I should be spending some of the time doing prep work for my NaNovel. On my AlphaSmart Dana, of course.

Break

Seem to have lost the enthusiasm to write for my weblog recently. Mostly posting pictures of His Royal Chubbiness at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. He’s turning 1 this Sunday.

At times like this, it helps to visit friends’ blogs. Reading them can put some spark back to my own. I’m particularly enjoying Tarlia’s blog. She’s covering the Rainforest World Music Festival 2006 this weekend.

Hope I get back on track to posting more often again soon.

New Books

My latest order from AcmaBooks arrived this morning. Which surprised me a lot cuz I wasn’t expecting the books for another week or so. And I don’t remember getting an email from them to say the order’s shipped. Which they usually do. Oh well, it just meant I got a pleasant surprise this morning!

The books? Four of them. Three, I really wanted. The fourth, to qualify for free shipping. But it was something I saw in the bookshop and thought I might get. Well, now got already.

The books?

A Black Eye Isn’t The End of the World
Ray G Strobel (a book of Panda Principles)
Bird by Bird
Anne Lamott (yes, finally got my own copy)
Becoming myself - reflections on growing up female
Willa Shalit, ed
Peanuts Guide to Life
Charles M Schulz

The growing up female book offers a curious mix of contributors, but the article by Janis Ian alone was worth the price. Buying a copy also benefits four organisations - Equality Now, The Family Violence Prevention Fund, INTERSECT-Worldwide, and V-Day.

Other contributors include Maya Angelou, Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep. The article by Tomlin is very funny.

Sheesh …

Summer Solstice 2006 came and went and I forgot about it until this morning.

Michelle Yeoh’s sister

Posted on 21 June 2006 @ 06:19 in Being Silly, General

I always get this reaction when I tell people I went to university with Datin Michelle Yeoh’s younger sister who was my senior by a year.

She doesn’t have a sister.

Same reaction I got from my sister when I mentioned it over dinner yesterday evening. My sister also said “she has only one younger brother.”

I went on to explain that Grace Yeoh is actually Michelle’s cousin, but their fathers are blood brothers, which (to the Chinese) makes them almost sisters. Their Chinese names are very similar, too - Michelle’s is Choo Kheng, and Grace’s is Choo Leng.

And how did Michelle’s name come up during dinner? The previous evening, I was channel surfing when I saw that TV3 was showing Police Story 3, starring Jacky Chan and Michelle Yeoh. The second half of the movie was shot in Kuala Lumpur. I’ve seen it before, but enjoyed it again when I stopped my surfing to watch the movie that evening. She’s very good, and has brought a fair bit of limelight to Malaysia. Positive limelight, too.

You go, Datin Michelle.

And hi, Grace!
