Misnomer

I wish! Actually, it’s just a copy of our picture taken at the UK LRC in April 2006 that is in Paula’s hands.

Also in Paula’s hands is a signed copy of the Night Rains CD that has the song “Here comes the night” that Paula recorded in Cantonese as “人似浪花” (“Life is like the ocean wave” ). If you look closely, the same CD is also in the picture within the picture. Yes, that’s one special CD that travelled around the world – from Nashville, TN to Lewes, England before going to Malaysia and finally to the Hong Kong Coliseum to be presented to Paula on the night of 16 December 2006.

For me, this is trully an instant where words are not necessary, and a picture – or in this case, two pictures – paint a thousand words.

Note – in the second picture is the music director for Paula’s concerts

Somewhere in Malaysia? Nope. My friend Anne saw it while on holiday in Southport (somewhere in the UK, I think) recently, where she and hubby (that’s his finger in the picture) stayed at a very cheap hotel (with a small carpark). She calls it an “example of the current low standard of British education!”

So, I’m on holiday (and posting from the library at the University of East Anglia, my alma mater, in Norwich.) And I couldn’t resist checking on some of my must-read blogs, one of them being Sharon Bakar’s.

The latest post on her blog asks “What Kind of Writer?” Of course, I couldn’t resist. Here’s my result:

Overdone Popcorn

Sometimes, it doesn’t pay to follow instructions to the letter.

The instructions had said “microwave 4 minutes on high” . So my niece had done exactly that.

Soon, the kitchen was filled with the delicious buttery smell of popcorn and a popping sound like that of rain on a tin roof. By the third minute, the popping sound had stopped, the bag looked like it was done, and then … and then … the buttery smell was replaced by an awful “burnt” smell that was accompanied by something billowing out of the top of the microwave …

Smoke!

Eww … the instructions were wrong, and because we followed it to the letter, we wasted a bag of popcorn.

Sheesh …
