In case anyone is wondering, yes, I had a great time. I have something half-written in my Dana about the concert, which isn’t finished yet, but I thought I would post something here first.
I have two pictures and four audio snippets of the concert in my Zire 72 that I’m hotsyncing to my home PC right now (yes, at almost 2 in the morning). An announcement before the concert had cautioned no audio or video recordings. But just as she was launching into her cross-over hit “Constant Craving”, I found myself thinking I had to have some tangible memory of this moment. So I took out the Zire 72 and pressed the voice memo button. And I sneaked a couple of shots, which largely went unnoticed since there’s no built-in flash to draw attention to what I was doing.
I don’t think I broke the “no audio or video recordings” rule since what I took are not professional quality but mere “home” stuff meant completely for my own private consumption. Yup, the pictures won’t be posted here, but there are similar shots from her concerts in other venues posted by kdfans at the MSN forum. Let me ask permission before I put a link here, k?
Besides “Constant Craving”, one of the other audio snippets features her singing “Three Cigarettes in the Ashtray”, her tribute to the late Patsy Cline that evening.
More later …

Thanks, Bendrix, for kd’s hymns of the 49th parallel. It’s a timely gift and wonderful prelude to next Friday’s concert.

It is exactly a week to kdlang’s concert in Singapore.
My brother emailed this morning to say there’s an article in Straits Times Life! on her today, and gave a link to the online version. Unfortunately, registration is required, and the form asks for way too much personal information so I didn’t register. I replied and told him, and asked him to keep the paper clippings for me. He replied with the full text of the article, which I don’t think I can reprint here (copyright and what-have-you), but have excerpted below for comment.
| KATHRYN Dawson Lang was nursing a nasty cold when she phoned Life! from Los Angeles last Wednesday morning. |
It’s Kathryn Dawn Lang, not Kathryn Dawson Lang.
| The hallmark of this tour is that in each destination, she performs with the local symphony orchestra, often barefoot. |
This brings to mind her song “Barefoot”, which she wrote for the movie Salmonberries. Yes, she’s in the movie, too.
Certain lines in the song have given me the goosebumps, in particular, the chorus:
“But I’d walk through the snow barefoot
If you’d open up your door
I’d walk through the snow barefoot …”
| Shortly before crossing over from country to adult-oriented pop in 1992 with the hit album Ingenue, lang came out of the closet, making public her same-gender preference.
The move made her an instant icon, especially after she was featured on the August 1993 cover of Vanity Fair magazine in a Herb Ritts photo. |
I have a real printed copy of that particular issue! I also found an online version, but won’t put it on this page (due to its possible offensive pose; my apologies to you if you find it so), but have it linked here.
Seven days to seeing kd “live” … never thought it’d happen.

Email from my brother just minutes ago:
| Confirmed booking. Circle 1 Balcony G, seat 29. I will collect the ticket at the SISTIC ticket agent at the Singapore Conference Hall which is within walking distance from my office. |
*silly grin on face*
We’ve also discussed asking my father along for that weekend (4 February), altho not to see her in concert, but just to come along for a break. The plan is to stay until CNY Eve and fly back here with my brother. Hope he’ll at least agree to come along for the weekend.

Well, I’ve got my ticket to the Janis Ian concert in Singapore in late February. My brother brought it back when he came home before Christmas.
I’ve renewed my passport. It’s due to expire in May 2005, but travelling in February is within the 6-month no-travel period, which is why I had to renew it. I went to the Immigration Office during the last week of the year and was right that it wouldn’t be too crowded. I arrived around 8:30 a.m. and was done before 10:00 a.m. I was told to come back the next day to collect the new passport but didn’t do it till the day after because of father’s appointment at Pantai Medical Centre. When I collected the new passport, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the expiry date is counted from the original one, i.e., May 2005 and not when it was renewed (December 2004).
I have also booked my flights to Singapore. Yes, “flights”. One, for late February, to attend Janis’s concert, and the other, for early February, to attend the kd lang concert that I haven’t booked a ticket for.
At the time I booked the flights, I still wasn’t sure about going to see kd but it’s less than a month away and close to the Chinese New Year season, so I thought I better book the flight first, which can be cancelled later if I decide not to go.
Well, now I’ve decided to go see her in concert. It’s probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and instead of me travelling all the way to somewhere else, she’s actually coming to my part of the world (like Janis is doing), so why not attend?
The main reason for the hesitation is cuz both concerts are in the same month, and with father still recovering from his bout of pneunomia, I felt it wasn’t right to leave him on his own for longer than 24 hours twice in the same month.
Sometimes, filial piety is a heavy load to carry, especially on my own.
Oh, maybe I should ask if he wants to come along?
