Well, actually watching a webcast from Bluebird Cafe, Nashville featuring Janis Ian and three other singers. They’re doing rounds, i.e., everyone gets to do one song, beginning with the host (Jim Photoglo), and going on to the singer on his left, and so on.
The webcast began around 10:30 a.m., and they’re still going strong.
So far, Janis has sung four new songs from her new CD to be released next February.
Usually, you don’t hear any new songs from any singer until they’re made available in their next CD (or whatever). But then, Janis is not “any singer” . She’s different. In a really neat, nice, cool sort of way.

I thought the melody sounded familiar. After giving it my further attention, I realised I’d heard it before as a Cantonese song by a singer called Paula Tsui from Hong Kong.
When I got home just now, I took out the one and only Paula Tsui CD I own and true enough, music credits for track two of the CD list “Janis Ian” .
The song?
“Here comes the Night” , theme from The Bell Jar, and featured in her album Night Rains, originally recorded 1978, released 1979 and digitally remastered 2003.
The third track is also credited to Janis Ian, but for the life of me, I cannot place the original JI English version.
Here’s a combined excerpt featuring Janis’s original English version followed by Paula’s Cantonese version.
I’ve always liked Paula, and now there’s reason to be playing her music again.

I’d first heard this song … well, I actually saw her perform it on her Live at Club Cafe DVD, and realised what some of the other Rudies have been raving about. Powerful song. Not just her voice, or the music, but her words, too.
And then, I heard the “original” , the recorded version as it first appeared in her god and the fbi album, and it was just her and me, in the car, her words loud and clear, me all ears, and after a while, some tears, too.
And I, who never could believe
never saw the need
wanted just to see your face again
with nothing to hold on to
now I’ve finally found you

“Lord, Reign in me”
Over all the earth,
You reign on high,
Every mountain stream,
Every sunset sky,
But my one request,
Lord, my only aim,
Is that You’d reign in me again
Chorus:
Lord, reign in me,
Reign in Your power,
Over all my dreams,
In my darkest hour,
You are the Lord,
Of all I am,
So won’t You reign in me again
Over every thought,
Over every word,
May my life reflect,
The beauty of my Lord,
Cause You mean more to me,
than any earthly thing,
So won’t You reign in me again

“Golden Traxx” on TraxxFM, hosted by someone from my long-ago past, Gene Joey.
He’s on every Sunday evening, 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Thanks to deesee for posting about it.
Listen to it here (requires RealPlayer).
He specialises in oldies (that’s why the show is called “Golden Traxx” , y’know?), and plays a lot of songs from our “era” , i.e., our adolescent (aka teenaged) years!
Some of the songs he’s played so far this evening:
1) “Groovy Baby” – The Microbe
2) “My Name is the Wind” – Frankie Cheah
3) “I Pretend” – Des O’Connor
4) “Bringing on back the Good Times” – Love Affair
5) “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)” – Keith Locke and the Quests
*swoon*
Thanks, Joey.
