Original Alphasmart 2000 Review

By the time I returned from my holiday on the West Coast of the United States, I had logged 17,564 air miles from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Los Angeles, CA, and back. During that time, I had written 17,771 words on my AS2K, which worked out to just a little over one word for every mile I flew, or 1,777.1 words for every day of my 10-day holiday.

I wrote mostly in bed at night, but also on the plane, the train, and also at a cafe.

I didn't have a chance to upload any of the files until a week after I started my holiday. I had started my holiday on Monday, 30 April 2001 Malaysian Time (or Sunday, 29 April 2001 in the States), and I did my one and only AS2K-to-desktop PC file upload for the entire holiday on Sunday, 7 May 2001. By that time, I had written close to 14,000 words on my AS2K.

Need I say more? The AS2K is the ideal travel writing companion. It's light, it's portable, it takes up little space, and it's powered by three AA batteries. That's right, no power cables to tangle you up, only a single file upload cable.

Note: Since my recent holiday, I have upgraded to an Alphasmart 3000, a gift from the Alphasmart web site for being the April 2001 winner of its monthly contest. I've been using the AS2K since March 1998, and the AS3K makes a most welcome gift and upgrade indeed!
